JSS 1 English Studies Curriculum

  • Listening & Speaking: basic pronunciation, stress and intonation in everyday words and sentences.
  • Listening & Speaking: greetings, introductions, classroom language and simple dialogues.
  • Grammar: nouns, pronouns, adjectives and adverbs – types, functions and correct usage in sentences.
  • Grammar: simple tenses (simple present, simple past, simple future) and subject–verb agreement in basic sentences.

  • Grammar: present perfect, past perfect and continuous tenses in meaningful contexts.
  • Grammar: active and passive voice (introduction) and correct use of modals (can, may, must, should, would).
  • Grammar: clauses (main and subordinate), complex sentences and advanced subject–verb agreement.
  • Reading: comprehension of narrative, expository and biographical passages; identifying writer’s purpose.
  • Reading: interpreting charts, tables and simple graphs as part of comprehension tasks.

  • Grammar: revision of all tenses; conditional sentences (Types 1–3), concord in complex sentences and phrasal verbs.
  • Grammar: direct and indirect speech (statements, questions, commands) and full mastery of active and passive voice.
  • Reading: BECE-style comprehension passages (narrative, expository, argumentative) with inference and evaluation questions.
  • Summary skills: identifying key points and writing concise summaries in own words within word limits.
  • Writing: narrative, descriptive, expository and argumentative essays for examination; planning and editing compositions.
  • Writing: formal and informal letters, articles, reports and speeches following BECE formats and scoring rubrics.
