When we started

Chess and Scrabble were introduced in New State High School on the 18th day of March 2022. The game was made compulsory to all learners because of its benefits, especially self dependency, innovation, concentration, creation, and sharp memory.

The school agreed on Wednesdays and Thursdays of every week for the coaching. The instructor started by explaining brain chess as an educational game that stir up students’ intellectual ability to think, reason, manipulate, create, and analyze things in their environment.

The students were taught how to:
1. Make a good opening
2. Defend their game
3. Attack the opponent piece
4. Play with speed and capture the opponent’s king

The students did their first class competition in 2022, and all the winners were asked to compete together, which brought the following winners;
1. Qudus of JSS2, who represented the Junior section, and
2. Basit of SSS1 who represented the Senior section.

Series of competitions took place too within the last year (2023), among which are:
1. The competition between NSHS and Jet Star College
2. The competition between NSHS and De- Gold school
3. The competition between 16 students of NSHS and computers

The students played with the computers at the intermediate level (level 3), and all learners played excellently well.

Chess and Scrabble were introduced to New State Nursery & Primary School on May 15 2022, and it was agreed Thursday of every week for coaching. The chess instructor presented the lesson to the learners by showing them the basics and fundamentals of chess and scrabble, which are
-Vertical
-Horizontal
-Diagonal
-Cheakmate
-Casting
-Attacking, defending and capturing of the opponent piece.

The students always show a readiness & a willingness to do more, especially in this new year 2024. We recommend that parents and guardians should show continued commitment as we intend to take the students to greater heights.

Emphasis was also laid on scrabble to strengthen their spelling ability to prepare them for spelling competitions. The instructor encourages all parents and guardians to provide chess and scrabble boards for their ward so as to enable them practice it in the comfort of their homes.

Long live Chess and Scrabble,

Long live NSHS.

May God help us all.
